So I have a big first grade program tonight which shall mark the culmination and (Thankfully), the demise of my student teaching experience. Actually, I have about half-an hour to kill before I need to change and get going, so I am going to write about something sweet that I was thinking about today as I was driving home.
For the past month and a half or so, I have been giving drum lessons to the coolest little 8-year old in town, Tyler. Him being the cool dude that he is, at our lesson last week he made sure to ask me what I wanted for christmas, and I told him not to get me anything because his grandmother pays me for lessons anyways. He insisted in a way that only an eight-year-old kid can, and so I told him that I wanted the Beatles' 1 album, being as I only have a few of their records, but nothing retrospective. He gave it to me today and as I was listening to it on the way home, I realized how truly pure and strong their catalogue is; not just the Beatles, but all of the trailblazers: Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Chicago, etc. While I am anywhere from 35-25 years late on all of these artists, I have really gotten more into the 'classics' over the past year or two. Zeppelin especially. I don't know why it has taken me so long to get really into these artists, but I guess better late than never. Now, I won't get too rash (The Chili Peppers are still my favorite band), but it is really refreshing to turn back the clock every now and then. It has also refined my perspective on some of today's music. For instance, I was never really a huge fan of Godsmack until recently, when I heard their (I think) fantastic cover of Zeppelin's 'Good Times, Bad Times'. Yet, after I heard it, I decided that any band with the chops to cover that song is Ok by me. So, if you have some spare time over your holiday break, I recommend digging out your parents' LP's and giving some of these records a listen, you won't regret it.
Oh, and by the way, I couldn't be more pleased with the new coach, boo........ya.......
Cheers
